Implants & Your Smile
When are implants used?
Implants are artificial teeth roots that are placed into your jawbone. They provide teeth replacements for patients who have lost teeth due to injury, disease or some other reason.
What types of materials are used for implants?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is made of titanium. It is threaded and screws into the jawbone to stabilize the implant while the bone heals.
The part of the implant that functions like the tooth is called a crown and made from porcelain.
What to expect during your implant procedure
The implant procedure will take about 30 minutes to place the implant into your jawbone. However, we ask that you schedule at least one hour to make sure there is enough time for prep and follow up.
Your dentist will apply anesthetic before starting the surgery. An opening will be made so that the implant can be threaded into position.
After the surgery, the dentist will take an x-ray to confirm the placement of the implant.
After Your Implant Procedure
After your implant procedure you will need to ensure that the area is kept clean for the success of the implant, and for your overall oral health. You may be offered a prescription for antibiotics or for pain relief if necessary.
Like any medical procedure, there are risks involved. Please consult your dentist to see if you are a candidate for dental implants.
